Time to Study

When I went to RR's parent teacher conference earlier in the year his teacher commented "Parents always want to know how they do in spelling, because it's a more of how did we do."  I wanted to snicker, but I kept it to myself; spelling wasn't an issue for him.  We never studied spelling words and he was getting perfect marks.

Then his 2nd trimester report card came home and his spelling grade went down a whole level.

And then tonight came.  He got a 65% on a spelling test.

Part of doesn't think the issue was whether or not he could spell the words; he had some words entirely wrong.  Like he's wasn't even in the right ballpark kid of wrong, which I guess is about right since he gets baseball and football confused.  For instance the correct word was "price" he wrote "callum".  Can you see me scratching my head.  When I asked him about the spelling of "giraffe" - "jerafe", he tells me "she threw in some curves that word wasn't on our list".  Try again kiddo it was on the list.

So we're going to start studying spelling words this week coming up.  I'm not really sure studying is going to help, but it sure can't hurt, right????

And the winner is....

Amy!!  She correctly guessed how big RR was going to be at his well-child visit today.  OK, ok... she was the only one that took a guess, but she was spot on.  RR is 82 lbs. and 55-inches tall.

You know what that means?  All of his aunts that are hovering right around (or below) the 5-ft mark better watch out it's just a matter of time till he's taller than you.

But do you what else it means?  It means that he's been having a steady 2.5 to 3 inch vertical growth per year for the last few years and is following along the 75% height curve nicely.  It also means that since his weight gain slowed down so much this year (BMI is now 19.05); especially in comparison to his height gain he is no longer "overweight".  I will tell you this is a HUGE sigh of relief.

Last year, when he was first classified as overweight I was crushed.  It made me feel like I was failing him as a parent; eating too many meals on the go and not getting in enough exercise.  I felt like I wasn't offering him a fair deal.  Now I know genetics has something to do with weight gain and especially height; and I know my brothers always chunk-ed up before growing upwards, but it was a hard place to be as a parent.  RR had always been on the leaner side; and even when he starting having some weight to him he was always a solid kid; but last year that was different.  I could see there was a problem developing with his weight and I am glad we've been able to overcome it.

I do in part thank the changes to his school lunch program; with the switch to all whole grains and three servings of fruits/veggies for meals they are a lot healthier now than they were in the past... and as I have mentioned in the past school lunches are my life-saver during the week.

But honestly I think  a big part of helping him maintain a healthy weight is him using the elliptical while watching his TV shows.  This is also a HUGE help with getting out his pent up energy.... ADHD plus in door recess all week is no bueno.

Now if only Husband and I could follow his example a little bit better.... I know our primary doctor would be happy to see that.

Showing off the "suit of armor" he made out of copy paper today.

So Cute

I must say RR is not the most patient child, and with the territory comes the need to rush through things.  Everything is a race for him.  That being said, his craft projects usually are not his best effort.

And just when I have the kid pegged, he turns around and brings home these stunning soda can recycled craft pilgrims; totally blowing me out of the water.

Aren't they just the cutest?

Operation Omega

Tonight we launched Operation Omega.  It did not start off very well.

What is Operation Omega?  This is what we are calling our plan to add more Omega 3, 6 and 9 into Turkey's diet.  When we received this Asperger's and ADHD diagnosis, or friends and family offered their advice: limit his sugar, go vegan, go gluten free, add more omegas.

I'm not a fan of limiting his sugar.  In my few experiences around kids who are on limited sugar diets, and then they say go to a party; it's been a nightmare.

We did gluten free for a while when he was a toddler and the doctor thought he had Celiac's Disease.  That as hard.

I can't do vegan, too much of a change and not really compatible with our family lifestyle right now.

So I looked into what affects the increase in omegas would have, and I felt this is a good route for us to take.

So I searched and searched and did my research and opted to buy Nordic Natural's Omega 3-6-9 Jr.  They were suppose to be a chewable soft capsule and the bottle boosted a great lemon taste.  None of the reviews I read on-line prepared me for these.  Chewable is a joke?  And they taste like lemon, until you get that hit you in the face fish taste, YUCK!!!

Turkey could not take them.  So now I need to figure out how to get him to take them.  But it's a start....

Lost

Turkey looses everything.  And I mean everything.

To further add to it, he can never find what he has lost.  He could literally be standing right next to the shoes he's looking for and not see them.  (Yet, he loves look and find books, go figure.)  I don't know if it's an ADHD thing, or an Asperger's thing... but it's his thing.

So, today when he can walking down to the basement all sullen and told me he lost his newest BeyBlade I shouldn't have been shocked.  He was crushed, his newest and beloved Rock Gasher was gone.  Missing in action.  He had bought it with his own money, so it meant that much more to him.  Not to mention he has extreme emotional attachments to his toys.

Now this wasn't a typical lost - it wasn't under the couch, or left in the car, or in a corner in his bedroom.  He lost it at the grocery store.

When we went grocery shopping this morning he brought his BeyBlade collection with him, in it's carrying case.  I didn't see him take this particular top out while we were in the store, but apparently he did.

We went back to the store (a 15 minute drive each way) and retraced our steps.  We stopped and looked around at the cereal he was debating on, we looked in the freezer where he got out the frozen corn, we looked everywhere.  Have you ever looked for a 2-inch round top in a grocery store?  Needless to say, we didn't find it.  Turkey left his name and number at customer service in case someone turns it in.

But he's not holding out hope for that, and has already started saving up for a new one.  He washed my car for $4 to get himself started.  With drive like that to get a new one, I am betting Husband picks one up for him.
